Previous instructions for Wireless / WiFi[edit]

I then used this recipe to set up wifi: http://www.dafinga.net/2013/01/how-to-setup-raspberry-pi-with-hidden.html

  • wpasupplicant was already installed.
  • Somehow the wifi connection didn't work first time round, and while I was playing with lsusb, lsmod, iwconfig it somehow started working. We'll need to see.
  • /etc/resolv.conf needed adding another name server - I don't fully understand this, maybe it's a problem with my home network.
  • The wifi doesn't seem to work that reliably.
  • Forum post: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=62228

The above recipe didn't quite work for me, see forum post on wifi. So I looked back at /etc/network/interfaces and removed wpa-proto, wpa-pairwise, wpa-group configuration. The /etc/network/interfaces now looks like:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-scan-ssid 1
wpa-ap-scan 1
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-ssid "_MY_SSID_"
wpa-psk _MY_PSK_
iface default inet dhcp

In particular these lines messed it up:

 wpa-proto RSN WPA
 wpa-pairwise CCMP TKIP
 wpa-group CCMP TKIP

The dongle still turns itself off. If you search for something like "edimax 7811un raspberry pi power mode", you'll find options for the power management, edit

/etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf

and add the line

options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0

to turn off power saving. There's also the recommendation to ping the router once per minute, but I'll see whether that's necessary!
