1 Metadata scheme comparison (MSC)[edit]

We start with a set of abstract elements (such as title, description, etc). These aren't proper xml elements: they just characterise the sort of thing we want to express in our xml scheme. We then take these abstract elements, and express them in various metadata standards.

In particular, we ask two questions:

  • How are our abstract elements expressed in various xml schemes in use in other systems (i.e. Replay, Matterhorn, virtpresenter, etc.)
  • How are our abstract elements expressed in common syndication formats, such as rss/atom/yahoo media?

IMPORTANT: Please also see have a look at Related Efforts!

2 The abstract elements[edit]

These are the abstract elements: id (edit), type (edit), title (edit), creator (edit), contributor (edit), abstract (edit), description (edit), subject (edit), institution (edit), place (edit), spacetime (edit), time (edit), collection (edit), size (edit), publisher (edit), language (edit), created (edit), modified (edit), available (edit), valid (edit), oldversion (edit), newversion (edit), license (edit), rightsholder (edit), mediacontent (edit), mediadistribution (edit), relatedinformation (edit), linkedmetadata (edit), timedimages (edit), subtitles (edit), timedkeywords (edit), chapters (edit)

Alphabetically: abstract (edit), available (edit), chapters (edit), collection (edit), contributor (edit), created (edit), creator (edit), description (edit), id (edit), institution (edit), language (edit), license (edit), linkedmetadata (edit), mediacontent (edit), mediadistribution (edit), modified (edit), newversion (edit), oldversion (edit), place (edit), publisher (edit), relatedinformation (edit), rightsholder (edit), size (edit), spacetime (edit), subject (edit), subtitles (edit), time (edit), timedimages (edit), timedkeywords (edit), title (edit), type (edit), valid (edit)

3 Expression in syndication formats[edit]

We now ask: How are our abstract elements expressed in common syndication formats, such as rss/atom/yahoo media?

See this table: Msc/SyndicationFormat: Abstract elements vs. expression in common feed formats (atom, rss, yahoo media etc)

4 XML scheme comparison (Replay vs. Matterhorn vs. virtpresenter etc.)[edit]

We now ask: How are our abstract elements expressed in various xml schemes in use in other systems (i.e. Replay, Matterhorn, virtpresenter, etc.)

See this table: Msc/StandardsComparison:

Abstract elements vs. expression in common metadata formats (dublin core, LOM, mpeg-7)
